Even though Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, and probably has one of the richest coral reefs varieties, our coral reefs experience extensive destructions from irresponsible fishing and pollutions.
LIPI, the Indonesian National Science Institution, with the funding from the World Bank, intended to develop books for coastal fishermen's children that will teach them the importance of coral reef preservation.
Due to the low literacy rate amongst children in those communities as well as the more humid and wet living conditions, this book used simple, less words and more colorful pictures to help children of the coastal areas to be interested in reading them. Each pages was also laminated to make the book longer lasting.
Selected children from all provinces of Indonesia then were trained as the coral reef ambassadors. They were trained in Jakarta, and their activities were documented in the coral reef ambassador's book.
